Samsung SCX-4300: How to reset the toner counter

Samsung SCX-4300I already talked about my problems with the SCX-4200 printer, with Samsung drivers for Linux and Ubuntu 8.10. Now I discovered that the newer model I bought, the SCX-4300, has a disagreeable system to check the level of the ink in the toner, with a chip mounted on original toners from Samsung. Checking the toner and printer inks can be very tricky!
When the level is near to the end, the printer gives error and stops. In other words, it disallow you to use all the ink; in addiction of this, you can’t use compatible toners because they doesn’t have the chip, so the printer doesn’t restart even after you replace it.

Gabriele Piscitelli published the complete procedure to enter the service mode of your Samsung SCX-4300 printer, flash it and reset the ink counter. I translated the tutorial in english and I want to share it with you. The original italian article can be found on his blog.

DISCLAIMER: as usual, I am not responsible for any damage you can cause with this procedure!

  • First of all, download the software pack: SCX-4300.zip (here’s a local mirror) and extract it in your hard disk (C:\), creating a C:\scx-4300 folder;
  • Now fire up a command line window: click Start -> Execute…, type CMD and press enter;
  • In the black command line window type cd / and press enter; then type cd scx-4300 and press enter again;
  • Type fix4300.exe SCX4300_V1.13_Fact_romdl.hd and press enter; this script will create a new file in the folder, named FIX_SCX4300_V1.13_Fact_romdl.hd. This file is created starting from the unique serial of your printer, and it will replace the original one in your printer flash memory.
  • Let’s go to service mode: press the following buttons on your SCX-4300 panel:MENU
    COPIES
    <
    >
    MENU
    >

    You have to execute the entire sequence quickly! If nothing “strange” happens, just press “STOP” and redo it.

  • If everything is done, you should see “TECH MODE“ in the display of the printer;
  • Press the “MENU” button, follow these steps: DATA SETUP -> FLASH UPGRADE -> LOCAL, then press “OK”;
  • Go back to your computer: you’ve to drag and drop the file we created before (FIX_SCX4300_V1.13_Fact_romdl.hd) to the icon named usbprns2.exe;ù
  • The display on Samsung SCX-4300 should say:
    - Data receiving
    - Flash erasing
    - Flash Programming
    - Checksumming
    - Download Ok
  • Then the printer will reboot. You unlocked it!
  • When the printer is ready, just repeat the sequence you used before to enter the “TECH MODE” and follow these steps: DATA SETUP -> CLEAR COUNTERS -> CLEAR ALL CNT. The status LED on the printer should become yellow, then finally green. Now you can print again, using all the remaining ink!

    by following ur step on. in the TECH menu i cant see any “Clear All CNT”
    my samsung scx-4300 is in version 1.13 now, but, the CRU Prints still remainning in 759pages and the status light on the printer is still keep on blinking red.
    please lead me how to clear it on the next step.

    Hi there i just read what you typed and havent gone through the whole procedure but just one thing again the new scx4300 toner cannot be refilled and is not interchangable with sxc4200 due to the installed chip on the catridge am i correct?

    I had the “Ben Problem” and then, by pouring through rough translations of things I wouldn’t understand in regular English, figured out how to solve the problem. I think that you (and I) accidentally dragged and dropped the original file “SCX4300_V1.13_Fact_romdl.hd” instead of the new file “FIX_SCX4300_V1.13_Fact_romdl.hd” the first time around. No problem, just have the printer do another Flash Upgrade and while data receiving drop the new file (FIX_SCX4300_V1.13_Fact_romdl.hd) on the usbprns2 file and then you now have the option to CLEAR ALL CNT.

    Guys when it displays DATA RECEIVING or PROGRAM UPGRADE for more than a minute, please switch off the printer and try again, the process should only take less than 30 seconds to do everything.

    the firmware uploads but the counter will not reset.

    Someone as any idea? I tryed contacting the producer of hack (alutov AATT bk.ru) but non response from it.
    I’m a programmer but i can’t have the know-how for start hacking from zero.

    Some one has the know how or the source of fix4300.exe (pheraps developed in PowerBasic???).

    for those with problems with v 1.21 , you can download the firmware from russian sites only.

    follow any other fireware instructions, or after getting into the ‘tech mode’
    click on fix21.bat
    then download21.bat

    and wait for the printer to reflash.

    it works for me, i got the green led, the replace toner message will still be there, but now you can continue using the rest of your ink :)

    However, I saw in the printer SCX-4300 that Data receiving and then Program Upgrade…Please wait…
