Does MSN Messenger delete your files?

Blocked MessengerMicrosoft added a filter that blocks reception for files with several extensions (MP3, RAR, ecc), in latest releases of Messenger. This function is really annoying also because it doesn’t blocks SENDS: it lets transfers go on, warning users about the security feature only at the end, then it deletes the file that has just arrived, without giving any choice.

A patch has been released: it unlocks receptions of these so-called “potentially harmful” files, but it’s necessary to apply the patch for the right version of Messenger (the exact version is in the “?” menu in MSN, “About MSN Messenger”, “Version 7.x (Build 7.x.xxxx)”… check out your “x” ;)
Various patches for MSN Messenger 7.x are linked in this italian forum.

If you don’t want or if you can’t patch the application, there’s another simple trick: if you see the hateful message at the end of a transfer, don’t click on OK and go look for the file that has arrived (in the location you chose when you accepted it), then create a copy of it, with another name and in another folder, then feel free to click on OK. Only the original file will be deleted, the copy will remain. It should be sufficient renaming the original file before clicking on OK (I didn’t tried yet).

Yes, I hate that thing… I always have this impulse of clicking OK, and of course, I always forget and yell and curse MSN Messenger for this. There should be a preference to turn that off.

Msn is NOT secure , i haven’t seen on any msn messneger website that msn is a secure messenger

and a added bonus…. text from a convo is send over in clear-type text format…. that’s right no encryption at ALL meaning anyone with the right software can intercept ur instant messages.
